The mullet-sporting leading man was not really much of a character to begin with, but basically a one-note laugh pertaining to ’80s TV icon MacGyver. On SNL, the actual skit is shown as a short 90-second tease. And Forte, having his crazily elastic face can show just the correct amount of manic energy. . . for 90 seconds. He was overconfident to the extreme and failed spectacularly. The film saves that 90 sec scene till the very end, providing a lengthy run-up which is mainly a James Bond-style action pastiche with a touch of Rambo-itis. Before the very last scene, the story has him putting together a team which comprises of a solider (Ryan Phillippe) and a solider-turned-singer (Kirsten Wiig) to eliminate the diabolical Dieter Von Cunth (Val Kilmer) who plans to blow up Washington, D. C. The sad thing is, the movie becomes as much of a scattershot joke on the Reagan years as it is about MacGruber himself. The generous use of F-bombs makes clear that the SNL writers (Forte, John Solomon and Taccone) had themselves a ball being unhinged. There’s likewise some flickering wit in the approach the video inserts Reagan-era pop cheese wherever it can: a bit of Toto’s “Rosanna” in the soundtrack, the Blaupunkt cassette deck the leading man carries with him almost everywhere. MacGruber arriving at a party in a white-colored suit which screams John Oates circa 1985 may well be an easy laugh, but a laugh it is. The photography dukes it out between neon and black-on-orange; there’s a severely ugly-looking scene set during the villain’s poker game, in what’s lit to seem like a pinkish grotto. Of the new movies out on dvd, is “MacGruber” any good? “MacGruber” isn’t the skit’s one joke over and over again. Rather it is lots of butt- and poop- related cracks made repeatedly, which isn’t better. That unfortunate fixation aside, this incredibly ridiculous flick gets a few laughs by putting an incompetent moron into perilous scenarios while steering clear of any “Naked Gun”-style slapstick. “MacGruber” places the “sort of” in “sort of funny,” in which, on a range populated with both “Wayne’s World” and “It’s Pat,” registers as both a relief and a disappointment.
