The Devil Wears Prada is a comedy-drama film directed by David Frankel, based on the novel by Lauren Weisberger, a journalist, who in turn was inspired by personal experiences. The “bad” the story would be his ex-boss, Anna Wintour, for whom he had worked at Vogue magazine. Both the book and the movie is a satire of the fashion world, so follow the line of the film Prêt-à-porter directed by Robert Altman.

The interpretation of Streep received rave reviews from critics, and later, earned nominations, including one for the 2006 Oscars and Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical. Blunt also drew favorable notice and nominations, as did many of those involved in the production of the film. While critical reaction to the film as a whole was more measured, this was well received by the public, becoming a summer blockbuster upon its release for June 30, 2006 in North America. The commercial success and critical praise for Streep’s performance continued in the foreign market, with leading the international box office film around October. This film is one of the big-budget movies in Streep’s career (the first being Mamma Mia!) And the first in the race, Hathaway.

The film is set in the fashion world, most designers and other fashion notables avoided appearing as themselves for fear of upsetting the American editor Anna Wintour of Vogue, who is widely regarded as the inspiration for Priestly. Many designers let their clothes and accessories for use in the film, making it the most expensive movie costume in history. Later, Wintour overcame his initial skepticism, saying that he liked the film and Streep in particular.

There are great movies that are so intriguing and emotional that the film itself makes the actors stand out more than they would in say an independent or low budget film. The bigger the movie, the more popular an actor can become. Take for example Nicolas Cage. There are times when Cage offers award-winning performances and times when it seems like he’s just reading a script to get through a huge-budget film and land the big paycheck. I’m sure plenty of actors would not pass up millions of dollars simply to not star in a cheesy film like Ghost Rider but are they wasting their talent? Think about Cage’s performance in Snake Eyes and Wicker Man. Now think back on his heart-wrenching display of raw talent in Leaving Las Vegas or his one-man show in Adaptation. This guy has serious talent but so many people out there see him as a poor actor because he has starred in so many “paycheck” movies! What on earth has happened with Robert DeNiro? Here is one of America’s most famous actors of all time, pumping out some serious skills in countless award-winning movies like Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, The Godfather, Casino, Goodfellas, Awakenings, This Boy’s Life. . . the list goes on forever. Don’t get me wrong, DeNiro is spectacular in every movie he’s in, good or bad, but even he seems to be choosing to star in films that are borderline insignificant. I was initially surprised to see him star in a comedy when he did Analyze This and feared it might be down hill from there, but he pulled through with this film and did a phenomenal job in Meet the Parents, but what about Everybody’ Fine, Showtime and 15 Minutes?Even Robert DeNiro is not immune to making poor decisions when it comes to choosing movie roles but I think we all know that he doesn’t need the paycheck as much as Nick Cage. He can afford to be picky. Starring in bad movies still does not take away from DeNiro’s acting skills like it does with Nicolas Cage. Very few actors can star in such movies and still manage to maintain their skills. Now, let’s look at the reverse side, actors who do not have as much talent but are thought of by a mainstream audience as “good actors” because of the great movies they’ve starred in. There are a few mediocre stars out there that are very choosy about which roles they take and this definitely works in their favor. Keanu Reeves is the first person that comes to mind. Here is a prime example of a not-so-great actor who has been in such popular films that he was even nominated for Best Actor at the Saturn Awards for The Matrix, no to mention the fact that he was paid a whopping $10 million plus 10% gross. Now that’s insanity. It is rare, but sometimes all you need is a pretty face and he definitely has it. Some of the other popular movies that Reeves has been in have also put him in the limelight like Speed and The Devil’s Advocate. The other actor who stands out is Bruce Willis. I think he is just about the most loved grade C actor around. Old people like me remember when he was on the TV series Moonlighting. I remember noticing at a very young age just how poor his acting was on this show, but after a few years of starring on the big screen, we grew to love him. He developed his own character of a handsome, rugged action star that is great with one-liners and this character was adaptable enough to be incorporated into many hit films like the Die Hard movies, The Last Boy Scout, Pulp Fiction and more. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like Bruce Willis and I think I can speak for many fans when I say how surprising it was to see his serious performance in The Sixth Sense. I don’t know what Shayamalan did, but it worked. It’s just too bad he couldn’t have done the same for Mark Wahlberg in The Happening. My point is, that if the actor is great enough and has a long line of historical performances like Robert DeNiro does, chances are their skill can remain unblemished and their fame can continue untainted. Actors without the advantage of flawless skill should take lessons from those like Keanu Reeves and focus on the big movie to earn the occasional ridiculous paycheck. They’ll be set for life if they never star in another film, otherwise they can learn more with each role and grow to become an inspiration. By: Francis David

There were a lot of great movies and very funny movies of 2010, but The Other Guys takes the cake. Even if you are not a Will Ferrell fan, and I know there are plenty of you out there, you have to love this movie. The combination of Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell is great on screen. Mark is very serious, but vet unintentionally funny and Will is just plain hilarious. Samuel L. Jackson and The Rock were very good in their brief roles also. The funniest part of the movie was the scenes with Eva Mendez, who is stunningly beautiful (top 10 in the world). She plays the part of Will Ferrell’s “ugly” wife. Over and over he keeps talking about how unattractive she is and Mark Wahlberg is beside himself for obvious reasons. The movie is just a riot from start to finish. The best comedy of 2010 hands down. The Other Guys DVD comes out on Dec 14, 2010. This is one of the DVD of 2010 that everyone will want to own a copy of. The Other Guys DVD Cast: Derek Jeter . . .
