The Devil Wears Prada is a comedy-drama film directed by David Frankel, based on the novel by Lauren Weisberger, a journalist, who in turn was inspired by personal experiences. The “bad” the story would be his ex-boss, Anna Wintour, for whom he had worked at Vogue magazine. Both the book and the movie is a satire of the fashion world, so follow the line of the film Prêt-à-porter directed by Robert Altman.
The interpretation of Streep received rave reviews from critics, and later, earned nominations, including one for the 2006 Oscars and Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical. Blunt also drew favorable notice and nominations, as did many of those involved in the production of the film. While critical reaction to the film as a whole was more measured, this was well received by the public, becoming a summer blockbuster upon its release for June 30, 2006 in North America. The commercial success and critical praise for Streep’s performance continued in the foreign market, with leading the international box office film around October. This film is one of the big-budget movies in Streep’s career (the first being Mamma Mia!) And the first in the race, Hathaway.
The film is set in the fashion world, most designers and other fashion notables avoided appearing as themselves for fear of upsetting the American editor Anna Wintour of Vogue, who is widely regarded as the inspiration for Priestly. Many designers let their clothes and accessories for use in the film, making it the most expensive movie costume in history. Later, Wintour overcame his initial skepticism, saying that he liked the film and Streep in particular.
